This side event will examine what it means to move from political commitments to concrete implementation for LGBTI inclusion in the 2030 Agenda. As the 2026 High-Level Political Forum reviews SDGs 6, 7, 9, 11 and 17 under the theme “Transformative, equitable, innovative and coordinated actions for the 2030 Agenda”, the discussion will highlight how these goals shape the daily realities, safety and opportunities of LGBTI people and communities.

Access to water, sanitation, energy, infrastructure, housing, cities, technology, financing and partnerships is not neutral. LGBTI people, particularly those facing intersecting forms of discrimination, continue to encounter structural barriers to services, participation, safety and accountability. At the same time, LGBTI organisations and movements are working in increasingly restrictive contexts, precisely when their engagement in sustainable development processes is most needed.

Bringing together Member States, UN entities, civil society and community-led organisations, the event will explore how governments and partners can better translate commitments into practice through meaningful participation, safe and ethical SOGIESC data, inclusive financing, accountable partnerships and stronger protection of civic space. The discussion will also reflect on the role of LGBTI civil society in SDG follow-up and review, including Voluntary National Reviews and the High-Level Political Forum.

With only four years left until 2030, the event will call for more coordinated, rights-based and community-led action to ensure that LGBTI people are not left out of sustainable development policies, programmes and accountability mechanisms.
