Spotlight Report: South Africa 2024
Spotlight Report on the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development Voluntary National Review (VNR) of South Africa
South Africa’s VNR comes at an interesting and in some respects, most challenging time. With 30 years of democracy, during which the African National Congress (ANC) ruled by majority, at the time of writing (14 June 2024), a somewhat contested Government of National Unity (GNU) is currently under formation to take the country and its development agenda forward. South Africa continues to grapple with both the profound legacies of apartheid and in some respects, the democratic government’s failure to deliver on and advance the most socio-economic rights, including ending poverty and hunger for all. Noting the specific mandates and areas of expertise of the LGBTIQ+ organisations submitting the present report, the focus of the present report is Goals 1,2 and 16.
Production of this report and associated consultations with LGBTIQ+ organisations in South Africa made possible by Pan Africa ILGA (PAI) working in strategic partnership with Access Chapter 2. This report was produced in close partnership and collaboration with the following South Africa-based LGBTIQ+ groups physically located primarily in three major provinces, namely Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Western Cape and with service provision capabilities through satellite offices across most rural and remote South African locations. This report was supported by The Power of Pride alliance that brings together COC, Pan African ILGA and ILGA Asia in a five-year partnership (2021-2025) with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
