Spotlight Report on the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development Voluntary National Review (VNR) of Rwanda

While many Sub Sahara African countries have formulated punitive laws against sexual and gender minorities, Rwanda is one of the few African countries that has assented to international conventions that protect the human rights of LGBTI people.

This research was developed using qualitative methods. During February and June 2023, twenty LGBTI activists and five civil society organizations working on human rights were interviewed to understand their views on SDGs inclusion of LGBTI people in Rwanda. In addition, three focus group discussions were conducted: one with LBT women, one with gay men, and another with trans and other gender-diverse persons.

This report was supported by Free to be Me and The Power of Pride alliance that brings together COC, Pan African ILGA and ILGA Asia in a five-year partnership (2021-2025) with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
